How to Design a Mezzanine

time2011/01/12

A mezzanine is a mini-floor between two full floors, often resembling a balcony overlooking a lower floor and usually with a low ceiling, according to "Home Improvement Power." Mezzanine design can provide a high degree of flexibility in terms of space and design for your home. You can use your mezzanine in a variety of ways suited to your needs. This space can become an entirely new room, used as a bedroom, reading nook or play area---all depending on the space allotted.
Instructions
Measure the entire area of your mezzanine with your measuring tape. Take note of all relevant measurements (length, width, ceiling height, window sizing and placement).
Evaluate the best use of the space for your home. Maximize any natural light if possible, and plan to use the space effectively to save time and money.
Draw a floor plan of your mezzanine suited to the design you have chosen for the space. Include any necessary dimensions. Remember to leave enough space around the stairs to avoid falls. Arrange the furniture, lighting and decorative elements on the floor plan drawing until comfortable with how everything fits. For example, if you have chosen a reading nook for your children, draw in the bookcases, seating and lighting on your floor plan.
Arrange the furniture, lighting and decorative elements on your mezzanine. Use the space as soon as possible in the desired fashion to ensure the layout works for you and your family; if it doesn't, change the layout or the function to better suit your needs.
