Pallet Racking Rules of Thumb

time2011/01/19

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, under the U.S. Department of Labor, implements workplace safety standards, especially in a potentially hazardous environment such as a warehouse. Employees should avoid using any equipment until they've been trained on it, to avoid injuries or sanctions.
????? Preparation
In a warehouse, boxes stacked on pallets -- wooden structures used for storage in industrial spaces -- typically get moved to an unloading area. Using a pallet jack, workers transport loaded and wrapped pallets to the racking zone, where it sits ready for a forklift truck driver.
????? Criteria
You can only place finished pallets on a rack if you have a forklift license. Employers expect forklift operators to be trained, responsible and healthy, with good eyesight, explains the Texas Department of Insurance.
????? Procedure
According to OSHA, forklift incidents cause "tens of thousands of injuries" in the workplace annually. Drivers should assess the weight of the load, drive slowly and check for damaged racking before putting the securely balanced pallets on the rack.
